Skim a stone

Duration:2 hours or less
Activity:For kids - things to do before you're 11¾

Skimming stones is an art everyone should refine! Luckily it doesn't take too long to become a pro, just a little practice and plenty of round, flat, smooth stones. Have a competition with your family to see who can get the most 'skips' from one throw! Say hello if you see me about - I'm known to be the National Trust’s elite stone skimmer. I can usually be found around Loweswater because that’s where the best skimming stones are (slate is my skimming stone of choice!).

You will need: A calm day to practice on flat water, plenty of flat stones, and family members or friends to compete against!

Ranger for the Buttermere and Ennerdale valleys, I live in Loweswater with my family; three boys aged 15, 11 and 9. I'm a very keen fisherman, an amateur archaeologist and work very closely with farmers within the valleys. In my spare time I'm a rugby coach for Cockermouth Rugby Union club. I have been working for the National Trust for over 25 years. For me, it is a way life not a job.
