Sky Ride Local page

Join us on free, fun, guided Sky Ride Local bike ride in association with our friends at British Cycling and Go Lakes Travel.  The rides are a great way to get out and explore the local area and some of our best loved National Trust properties with family or friends.

With different levels, there’s something for everyone – whether you’re building your confidence or already comfortable on a bike and looking for a challenge.  Running on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays through to October, the rides are guided by friendly British Cycling Ride Leaders along scenic planned routes.

Highlights of the Sky Ride Local programme in the Lake District include the Kendal to Sizergh Loop, a picturesque, quiet route from the historic market town to medieval Sizergh Castle, avoiding the busy main roads.  Or start out from Sizergh Castle on the Sizergh to Damsons ride along the beautiful Lyth Valley.

From Keswick, head out to the hidden National Trust gem, Force Crag Mine, on a valley ride to what was the last working mineral mine in the Lake District. Or hop aboard your bike for our easygoing Stations and Tunnels route along the old railway line to Threlkeld. Have you done our 50 things to do before your 11 and ¾? There are plenty of chances to do some of them on this ride.

If you’re a fan of Beatrix Potter, our Biking, Bunnies and Boats ride is just for you as this stunning scenic route takes in the haunts of the famous Lake District author, illustrator and conservationist. Led by a specialist guide, along with British Cycling ride leaders, you’ll cycle past many places where Beatrix Potter lived and worked, creating her famous characters and books.

How to book on to a ride

It’s completely free to sign up for Sky Ride Local rides online.  There is no limit to the number of rides you can take part in and there are no age restrictions on many of the routes (although some are only suitable for 8years+). Simply book your place on your chosen ride and then turn up at the start point with your bike.  If you don’t have a bike, there are plenty of bike hire companies in the area to choose from, including electric bikes for extra ‘oomph’.
